Client Brief on AngliCare Australia Research Paper

Client Brief on AngliCare Australia - Research Paper Example (AngliCare 2011). AngliCare is a social welfare organization in Western Australia that provides specialized services to all people ranging from children to the aged, some including family relationship services, foster care, adoption, employment services, community housing and development, etc. AngliCare’s Internal Environment: SWOT Analysis Strengths: The strengths of AngliCare lies in the services they provide, ranging from care for the aged, youth services, family relationship services, disability and carer services, disaster recovery, etc. also, their complete inclusion is a very strong point in their favor, meaning their non judgmental and non discriminatory acceptance of people from all walks of life. Their main motto is to care and they spread this message to all they come across. AngliCare’s organizational and services structures can also be mentioned as one of its strengths. They are comprehensive and well drafted. Weakness: AngliCare is facing issues in its asp ects, such as with some of its events, the volunteers and op shops. They need to work on resolving these to ensure they are not overshadowed by other social welfare agencies. Opportunities: AngliCare covers almost every person from every walk of life who might be facing problems. However, they do not have programs specific to women and children who have faced abuse. Designing programs for women and children in this dire state will be really helpful. Also, they can consider expanding their services to under-developed and developing countries that do not have such programs in place and require such help. India for instance, does not have social welfare programs for its unemployed or disabled. A program like this might come in handy to help these people get on their feet and help reduce other social stigmas like beggary. Threats: Being a social welfare agency, AngliCare doesn’t really face threats as such from competition. Social welfare is based in the theme of care and their o nly objective is to ensure the welfare of their people. Their threats will mainly come into the picture in terms of lack of resources and volunteers. Also, when people try to scam the agency in exchange for the resources they provide, it will create a problem for the agency. AngliCare’s External Environment: Stakeholders and Competitors In case of AngliCare, corporate partnerships provide the opportunity for companies to contribute to its work in the community.  Their programs provide physical, financial, emotional and spiritual assistance to help people in need to break the cycle of hardship. They have Corporate Care partners who assist in various ways such as sponsorship of events, workplace giving via payroll deductions for employees, encouraging people to volunteer at any of their locations and encouraging people to support them in kind, that is, via means of food, clothes and other such necessities. AngliCare, being a social welfare agency, does not really face competi tion as such from other social welfare agencies. All these agencies are non profit based and run for the benefit of people, local or otherwise. They do not judge or discriminate against the people they help out. All are equal in the eyes of god and these agencies. AngliCare’s Macro Environment: PESTEL Analysis Political Factors: AngliCare is facing political issues when it comes to its schools’ programs. More and more State, National and Overseas charities are

Sales Promotion Girl in Indonesia

Sales Promotion Girl in Indonesia Sales Promotion Girl in Indonesia Sales promotion girl is basically a girl who is promoting or selling something. She is one of the marketing parts of a company to promote their product to the customer. In Indonesia, the term sales promotion girl has arrived to a certain and unique connotation which is considered negative. Sales promotion girl in Indonesia is identical with young girls wearing sexy outfit seducing people to buy something. They are usually high school or university student -young and attractive essentially stealing all the glances from people around them. It is a bit hard to find the most correct definition of sales promotion girl. There is no such entry in the dictionary and when you typed it in the internet, mostly will give you a false answer, just a cheap site writing sales promotion girl to make people click on that site. There is no information contained there, just ads. They want to increase their click to get money from the internet business. This is some the result I get from Wikipedia (English) when I entered the keyword of sales promotion girl.  · Tell Me Why (Spice Girls song) Tell Me Why is a song by the Spice Girls , which was scheduled as the second However due to poor sales of Forever, the single was later 5 KB (623 words) 22:03, 25 November 2009  · Forever (Spice Girls album) (section Promotion) Forever is the third studio album by English pop group the Spice Girls , drop in sales compared to because of lack of promotion especially 13 KB (1,459 words) 21:55, 25 November 2009  · Sentimental Graffiti which spurred a large media sales campaign designed to widen the A unit entitled SG girls was formed and numerous events and concert 10 KB (1,487 words) 07:47, 25 March 2009  · Step to Me Kingdom running alongside sales promotion activities, notably one by where them off and received the free Spice Girls CD single Step to Me 2 KB (259 words) 04:30, 16 November 2009  · Giants and Toys candy company to compete with the rival Giant and Apollo companies over caramel sales. tomboy girl with bad center of their promotional campaign 2 KB (303 words) 04:59, 18 November 2009  · Purple Haze (album) to the lack of promotion Camron asked to be released from the label. Is it because people outside Indonesia did not use that term? I found that it is very hard to find a relevant article to support my research. Most of them is just those cheap ads site or the porn site which including sales promotion girl as their tag. Sales promotion girl is something which could not be separated from the company chain of supply. Sales promotion girl is the one who is facing the customer personally. There are sales promotion girl which are organic and non organic. Organic means that those sales promotion girl are the real employee of the company which are in charge in promotion of the goods made by the company. Non organic means that the sales promotion girl is only a temporary workforce which is hired with a limited time contract. The sales promotion girl could come from their individual or from the agency which provide at ready to use sales promotion girl stock. There are even sales promotion girls which comes from an outsourcing company. Nowadays, there is also security, telephone operator or cleaning service which comes from those company. The existence of the sales promotion girl in a promotion event such as mobile road trip or stand exhibition is useful in attracting the customer. The prospective customer will firstly look at the physical appearance of the sales promotion girl, if they think that she is attractive, they might want to come to the stand, receiving some brochure given by them, trying the product, etc. On the contrary, there is some company which do not feel that the existence of the sales promotion girl is important, especially the non organic one. This is due to the sales promotion girl which are non organic usually do not have a good competencies for the product which they are going to sell. They do not have time to learn about the product knowledge usually because the sales promotion girl is usually accepting a sudden job. There are also some sales promotion girl which care nothing with their product knowledge. They just think that they must attract the customer with their physical appearance and just giving the customer a brochure and explain the product just in brief. They just think how to end their shift and get the money for that day. Unlike the organic sales promotion girl who is more adept at the product knowledge because she is a part of the company. However, not every non organic sales promotion girl is like that. There are also non organic sales promotion girl who are trying to learn the product knowledge deeply. They are positioning themselves just like the common customer who will always want to know the detail of the product. They could even be a professional sales promotion girl who buy the product which they are going to sell so that they could understand what the customer will feel after buying the product. Sales promotion girl must master the product which they are going to sell. She must know what their competitor do. For example, a sales promotion girl of Kartu Halo must understand the product knowledge of Kartu Halo and understand all of the other postpaid services such as Xplor from Excelcomindo Pratama and Matrix from Indosat, and vice versa. Thats why the company and the sales promotion girl will need CAD (Competitor Activity Data). After the sales promotion girl has master more product knowledge and the competitors, this sales promotion girl will be a qualified sales promotion girl. There is not uncommon for this type of non organic sales promotion girl could enter the high position of the company and get an important position at the company which she used to joined partially. There are public known that the â€Å"requirements† to be listed as one the sales promotion girl come mostly from their physical appearance. They should be tall, white, pretty, and willing to use a sexy uniform which in fact, has no relation to the product they are selling. Sometimes, they are also selling things which have no correlation to a woman. Well, sometimes, another requirement such as the fluency in English or other language is necessary, but it is not mandatory. The most popular field in this sales promotion girl business is in the cigarette and automobile industry. Could you imagine a sexy lady coming to you and asking whether you are smoking or not? She is bringing a pack of cigarette with a short skirt and tight blouse which hardly covers her underwear. Most people-usually the male would say YES even if they are actually not smoking. They are just doing it to keep the conversation, to make her keep talking to them. Then, she will promote her product-cigarette in this case, explaining its taste, the sensation and the brand, which will not even reach their brain which are now occupied as their testosterone production increasing. â€Å"The hell with the cigarette.† Maybe it is what they are thinking in that situation. Then, she will give you a free sample of cigarette. You smoke it and hope that you will look cool to her. Then you will buy two packs of the cigarettes to impress her, she will say thank you, and left you with two packs of cigarettes which you wont even smoke! Another case of the sales promotion girl is in the automobile industry. There is usually a car exhibition in the center of the shopping mall. There are a lot of new cars showed which are usually â€Å"guarded† by sexy ladies who will gives you a brochure of that car. Both the girls and the cars will likely take all of the male species attention. Nobody could resist the temptation to peek a glance on the masterpiece work of human and god Himself. The business is using the ultimate creation of God to sell the ultimate creation of mankind. From the logical point of view, the practice of this sales promotion girl is belittling woman. It makes people questioning whether the business is utilizing the woman to sell their product or they are selling the woman instead. Well, they are not really selling the woman, but they are selling them literally. They are dressing her, exposing her in order to get peoples attention and eventually buy their product. It makes people think that Indonesias woman is available for sale. Essentially, the duty of a salesperson is to attract the prospective customer, promoting his/her product, and then persuade them to buy the product. But as time goes by, customers need something which is more attractive to make them turn their attention to something. They are tired of the sale announcement, free product, or special offer with small star written terms and condition apply. They need something more straightforward. Something which they could instantly obtained without having to do some requirement. The sales promotion girl is the answer to all of this demand. You want to see her? Just go ahead. You could look at her from the distance. You dont need to buy a product to look at her. It will cost you nothing to see those amazing figure. Its all for FREE!! Sales promotion girl is always being the frontal line of a sale, especially in launching of a new product. In promoting their product, sales promotion girl must have 4 skills in: 1. See A customer of course want to see the product which he is going to but first before he finally decided to buy the product. It means that the product must be attractive to them. That includes the people who are selling those products. The sales promotion girl should be attractive in order to make the customer see their product. 2. Touch After the customer is attracted to the product, this is the time for the sales promotion girl to â€Å"touch† the customer needs and wants to provoke them to buy the product. This is the chance for the sales promotion girl to allow the customer to look closely or even try the product which they are going to buy. 3. Feel Different After the customer coming to the stand, trying the product, the sales promotion girl should give them detail explanation about the product. What makes them different from other product? What is something special about those things? Will it be beneficial for the customer? 4. Buy Finally, it is time for the closing sales. Physical attraction power combined with fluency in communicating between the sales promotion girl and the customer will finally lead to the decision of the customer to buy the product. That is the reason why most people using the sales promotion girl rather than sales promotion boy. Nowadays, some people also feel empty when there is no sales promotion girl on an exhibition. It can be said that in an exhibition it is not only the product which the customer are looking for. It is also the sales promotion girl which is now an important part for the show. The spark of the sales promotion girl world in big events has attract many young girls with beautiful body to do this job which give quite good income. Many of the sales promotion girl are actually trying for the first time but then they got addicted to it. Maybe it is because of the money of the junior and the senior sales promotion girl are the same, or maybe it is because the work area which do not absorb too many brain of physical power. There is usually no specific test to be a sales promotion girl. Theres usually not even a single test held. Just submit your photo, identity, and interview (which sometimes is not conducted) and you are officially worked as a sales promotion girl. Psycho test, which are usually held before hiring someone, is used to : 1. Make objective decision. Psycho test will be supported by standardized test utensils which could increase the objectivity of the decision. By doing so, the decision to accept or reject a new employee will be based on the strong objective reason. 2. Validity of the test utensils. Psychology test is developed by scientific method so that the interpretation of the test is accurate and reliable to predict the prospective employee psychological. If this method is combined with the interview, it could accurately predict the performance of the prospective employee. 3. Reduce the cost of wrong recruiting A mistake in recruiting a wrong employee is very costly for the company, in example in the training fee or the advertising fee. Its not even included the energy and time used to the recruitment process. A psycho test could reduce those cost and they are relatively cheaper compared to the cost spent if the employee chosen is not competent. A psycho test also ensures a high chemistry between the prospective employee and the employer. But, there is also some exception to this psycho test. There is some case which the psycho test is not needed. The reasons are: 1. They nature of the job. There is some company which uses employee only for temporarily only, for example for data entry. If the entry job is done, than the job is done. The company did not need to use that employee again. For this type of job, psycho test is not effective because the employee wont be in the company for a long time. However, there is also some exception for this reason, for example if the employee, even temporarily working at the company, is having an important job. In that case, the occurrence of a psycho test is a must. 2. The responsibility of the job. An employee at a managerial level or the position which has a high effect to the company will be better to use a psycho test. There are a lot of money and cost allocated to those people and if the company chooses the wrong people, the cost could be multiplied. 3. Long term career development. If the job and the position has a possibility of a career development, it will be better to use a psycho test so that the company could get an employee which is really fit between the job and the characteristic of the individual psychological. 4. The cost of the test. Many company which have a big cost budget for the recruitment process so that they are doing the test for every position. However, there are also some company which does not have it. Due to that, it is necessary to find out the need of psychological test which is fit with the position which needs to be filled. Do not find a senior manager with a bad psychological test which is not accurate. 5. The availability of the prospective employee in the market. There is time in a specific job where the prospective employee is very high, making it easier to find the replacement immediately. In the other hand, there are also certain position which the candidate is very scarce and very hard to be found. For this type of position, it will be better if the company uses the psycho test because that kind of job usually needed some specific psychological requirement, or those people on the market who has specific personality. For this type of job, the company will need to make an accurate decision, which could be obtained by using this psycho test. So, by considering those factors, it is clear why sometimes sales promotion girl recruitment uses no psycho test. Maybe the job of the sales promotion girl is just a temporary job, or there is no career path for the sales promotion girl. It could also be possible that the company has no budget to conduct a psycho test for the sales promotion girl or maybe there are so many sales promotion girl availability in the market which makes the company think that there is no use to conduct the psycho test. (http://www.portalhr.com/klinikhr/strategis/4id1252.html) translated Being a sales promotion girl is not a very hard job. Due to by the fun got while working, sales promotion girl sometimes feel comfortable in doing her job. Sometimes being a sales promotion girl could even bring some other fun outside their work life. Creating a new relation and having an easy access to enter a nightclub really lead them to the hedonism lifestyle. All of this are mostly a result of trying or following a friend. There is even some of the sales promotion girl which leave their education; in high school or university. They do that because they feel comfortable in being a sales promotion girl. They are addicted to the sales promotion girl job. Their life has become a public concern, especially for a rich male who is looking for some sexual replenishment, which could increase their income. There is a new slang in the sales promotion girl world called SPG BISPAK which stands for SPG bisa dipakai (could be used). It means that the sales promotion girl could be booked anytime. With a sum of money they are willing to sleep together. Well, not every sales promotion girl are bispak, but that kind of sales promotion girl has really contaminated the job of the sales promotion girl. Those sales promotion girls who feel that they are not bispak should handle the peer pressure of the other people. Actually those sales promotion girls who are bispak is actually coming from those good girl who are just trying or invited by their friends. To know which kind of sales promotion girl are you encountering to is not easy. Even if they are seducing and naughty, that dont straightly means that they are the bispak. The personal approach is the best way to get more service from the sales promotion girl. The reason why many people prefer to have sex with a sales promotion girl is that they are different from the prostitute which are selling themselves in the street. Sex, is not their main business, so that people think that they are fresher and tighter compared to other prostitute. They do not do sex every day, just sometimes perhaps. Having sex with a sales promotion girl has less risk either. From the health, because they do not have sex as much as the prostitute, they have smaller chance to infect the sexually transmitted disease. Of course, that benefit should be covered by a lot of money. There are also some of this sales promotion girl who have dedicated themselves to be wanita simpanan (2nd wife) for certain people. It could be a rich businessmen or ministers. They are facilitated by them in return of the sexual replenishment given by the sales promotion girl. They are given an apartment to live, a car to use, or even with a driver. All that they need to do is just to keep this a secret, wait for a call from her man, and give them the best service that they could. To ameliorate the term sales promotion girl, some company changes it into Female Presenter. There is no difference in the profession, with the same payment, same rules, same job description. Too bad that even the name has been changed, but the impression made by them is stay the same. They are a young, good looking lady who is seducing man to buy their product. All of this sales promotion girl features cannot be changed by sales promotion boy. There is a funny example from inspirasipakde.com. Two pictures comparing sales promotion boys and sales promotion girls. Even if they are taking the same pose, It just doesnt make it. From my point of view, maybe because I am a male, Id rather choose the girl ads, and I do not want to see those boys posing in front of the car. It is just disgusting. But there is not only good story exist in the sales promotion girl world. There is also a funny story. When Anlene, a milk product was launching their product for the first time and the company didnt have enough fund to accommodate their transportation, the sales promotion girls are the one who became the victim. They should sit in the truck to be able to promote their product to the consumers. They do this so that the sales promotion girl could give personal approach to every consumers. Nowadays, as Anlene has grown into a big company, they are still using their sales promotion girl forces to keep their position in the market. We could easily spotted Anlene sales promotion girl in Carrefour or giant. Of course, they are not using the truck to get there now. In Indonesia, it must be tough For the sales promotion girl herself to keep hanging on this job. Not because of the income. A sales promotion girl is well paid in terms of salary. In 2009, a sales promotion girl could get Rp 300,000,00 per day for a full day work at a big event such as international expo, not including the commission obtained from the sale they made. The burden mostly comes from other people view of her. Maybe the people who pass by will think that she is a cheap woman, selling herself in the public or doing something haram for the Muslims by showing her body to other people. But those burdens would not equal to the negative view given by people near her; her family, her friends, or her boyfriends. What if they think that she is such a shaming girl? What if they refuse to call her as a sister, or daughter, or mother? The money she get will be worthless compared to all of this burden. There will always be a battle in a sales promotion girls heart. I wonder if she asks herself everyday whether what she is doing is a right thing. Infogue, Indonesian social portal, used to interview a sales promotion girl named Nina. She is a university student who works as a sales promotion girl to pay her tuition fee. At the time being, she is working at Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) 2008. She is a new girl in this industry, who has only just 1 year experience, but has been hired by many company. She starts this job by being a sales promotion girl for a cigarette, cell phone and automobile company. She said that from job, she could know a lot of people characteristic and feel more independent. She could now pay her own tuition fee for her bachelor degree. She admitted that she got different salary from each company, but the highest salary comes from cell phone company which could pay her Rp 300,000,00 per day. From 10 days of exhibition, she was usually hired for 8 or 9 days. In a month, Nina said that she could get 2 or 3 job. Could you imagine how big it is? Nina also said that being an automobile sales promotion girl is really tough because she need to have a lot of product knowledge. The customers are likely to ask a question and sometimes she could not answer those questions. Since she could get a lot of money from this job, she never thinks to work in the office. Moreover, her parents support her in doing her job. Once she heard her friend who was working in the offices story. She thought that the office job was so boring, just sitting inside the room and not getting as much salary as she get. She prefers to meet people just like what she does in this job(endel, infogue) Another story of from the sales promotion girls side of view is the story of Dewi. She is a 19 year old girl, who is working as a sales promotion girl in Arena Pekan Raya Jakarta at Kemayoran, Central Jakarta. When she is interviewed by Kompas, she is wearing short red skirt and a tight blouse with a hat and ponytail. She is working at a Japanese motorcycle company. Her job is to accompany the potential buyer and explain everything related to the product which they want to buy. That day, Dewi could sell 2 motorcycle after she clearly describe the products advantage. Dewi is not ashamed to work as a sales promotion girl. She uses everything she has such as her attractive face, nice body figure, and her talking ability. At 2007, Dewi was paid Rp. 100,000,00/day. That number, of course, does not include the bonus received if she is able to make a sale. At that time, she was aiming to get 5 million from the Pekan Raya Jakarta event. Unfortunately, not every sales promotion girl is paid as high as Dewi does. The sales promotion girl in furniture is only paid Rp 20,000,00 up to Rp 50,000,00 per day excluding the commission for the sales made. Too bad that those girls do not get as much fortune as Dewi do. Compared to the motorcycle product, the furniture product is not attractive to the customer. There is another girl named Fitri. She is not actually a girl now. She is a mother of 1 child. She tells her boss that she is still single and has no children to be accepted as a sales promotion girl. She does this to get some money and hopefully a big bonus to increase her income. (Adi Kurniawan, kompas cyber media) Do you know DJARUM Cigarette? That product is made in Indonesia and has been imported abroad. It is very popular outside of Indonesia, it even has its own ads on the penthouse magazine. Too bad that Djarum promote their product by using those sexy sales promotion girl with nearly no clothing attached to them. The writer of the article ask whether we should be proud by this achievement or not. (Djarum Ads) (Djarum Sales promotion girl) It could be concluded that Indonesia is a hypocrite country from this issues. The country which is well known as one of the biggest Muslims country in the world is in fact, allowing such thing to occur. While the house of representative is proposing an anti-pornography constitution, the capital of the country is displaying semi-pornography show. The capital of the country-Jakarta, which is recently rated as the 2nd worst city in the world, the symbol of hedonism and materialism is totally contradicting the constitution. There even used to be a case of Yahya Zaini, a minister of religion is taped having sex with a dangdut singer. It really show how hypocritical we are. If you typed the word sales promotion girl in google, the first entry of the page will be those sales promotion girl related to sex. Sales promotion girl video, pictures, sex tape, everything about the negative one. If you type the word sales promotion girl and search for its picture, you will see mostly are pornographic photo of them. Better keep your parental control on if you are with your children. Free Hamlet Essays: An Eye for an Eye :: Shakespeare Hamlet Essays

An Eye for an Eye in Hamlet  Ã‚   Claudius is justly punished for the murder of king Hamlet. The punishment fits the crime because his brother's son killed him. King Hamlet killed by the brother killed by the king's son. He was murdered. It was pay back, "what goes around comes around" "an eye for and eye and a tooth for a tooth" What these two quotes are mainly saying is that you get what you give. Claudius took his brothers life therefore his life was taken away. Not only did Claudius kill his brother to marry his wife and take over his throne, but he caused the deaths of the queen, king Hamlet, Polonius and Ophelia. Hamlet was told by the ghost of king hamlet to get back at Claudius for his death, or his soul will travel on earth forever. Even before hamlet knew about Claudius killing his father he had problems. It made hamlet mad that his mother would marry so fast and with his uncle. What Claudius did was an outrageous, back stabbing, and unbelievable thing. It was clearly an act of jealousy for his brother's throne and the wife. Claudius did pay back for his actions. Claudius lost his wife, his messenger, and died and even after his death kept loosing because he lost his castle to Fortinbras. Not only was Claudius punished by Hamlet but "God" also punished him. The reason that God punished Claudius, is because everyone he cared for and who helped him died. Polonius and Queen Gertrude. Polonius was killed by hamlet, when hamlet thought that he had killed the king. Claudius killed queen Gertrude with the poison whine that he had prepared for hamlet. He killed the one he loved instead of the one he wanted to kill. Claudius was even punished after death. His throne and whole castle was taken over by Fortinbras. Not only where his wife and friend dead, but he later died himself by his brother's son. Claudius killed and his turn to die came, but it took some time and other people to die too. Claudius was punished for the queen's death because although he did not intentionally mean to kill her, he watched her drink the poison that he had prepared for hamlet. He knew that she was going to die, but he didn't say anything because he was all for himself.

Ethics Wall Mart Essay

1. What financial impact do you think the lawsuit could potentially have on Wal-Mart? Ans. Wal-Mart is the biggest or largest retail store in the world. Naturally, their earning and employees are also more compared to other corporate. The lawsuit against the company was not the company needed when they were facing other legal issues such as the child labor and employment of illegal immigrants. Six women who say women were treated lower than the male even if they acquired equal posts; qualification and experience filed the lawsuit. The six women who filed the case against Wal-Mart are not only asking the company pay for the unfair deed but also asking them to pay back and compensate for all 1.6 female employees against whom Wal-Mart discriminated. This would cost the company a fortune because these 1.6 female workers were entitled to promotions, salary increment, trainings and other such things. To compensate or reimburse that much amount for that much workers would surely have a huge and major impact on the company’s financial position. The other way in which this lawsuit could affect the company’s financial position would be through the transaction or sales. Other thing is the reputation and goodwill of the company. 2. What are the major moral complaints of the females suing Wal-Mart? Do you believe these moral complaints are justified? Why? Ans. Major Complaints: Difference in the promotion scheme between male and female employees, The lower payment of wages and salaries to female employees even they were at same level with male employees, Unequal distribution of management training among the male and female employees, Male allotted a better job assignment compared to women even they were equally qualified, ranked and experienced. Yes, I believe these complaints are justifiable because we can see from every point that women were not treated fairly and equally. It wasn’t that women lacked in anything or that they were unwilling to work, it was because they were woman. We can very well compete with men and in some cases may even prove better than them but it is act like this what is pulling the power of women down. The six women who sued Wal-Mart didn’t sue for nothing; they had physical proof and evidences of the discrimination laid upon them. Some of the evidences were found in the employees’ records where by Richard Drogin, a statistical expert found out that employee at Wal-Mart was divided into two main groups, hourly employees who occupied the lower levels and salaried managers who occupied the higher levels. Compensation increases from one level to the next. In 2001, salaried managers made about $50,000 a year while hourly employees made $18,000. Drogin found out that not only 65% of hourly employees were women but also 33% of salaried managers constituted women. So at both the point women earned less than man. When we also look upon the experience level, an average woman was far more experienced than an average man because women worked or stuck there for longer than men. Women despite having other responsibilities like raising a kid or managing the home, they dedicate more where they work that is why they have less turnover rates. So this adds up to another reason why the lawsuit was appropriate or justifiable. 3. What factors do you think might account for the discrepancies the Drogin report uncovered? Ans. The company took the women employees for granted. At first the founder Sam Walton wanted equality but after passing away the core value was lost. The management took the women employees for granted so didn’t feel the need to promote them. 4. What, if anything, do you think Wal-Mart should do to correct these discrepancies? Should the company institute an â€Å"affirmative action† promotion program for female employees? If so, what should this program be like? Ans. 1 ) Work Discrimination Here I am talking about the actual work or labor work. Women at Wal-Mart seem to be working at par with men but still they are not paid at par. To compensate for the women’s losses they could reduce their work time or they could allocate women to areas where minimum energy is required. For example they could work at displaying of items, as a cashier, and such places where not much of hard labor is required. 2) Facility such as Day Care Wal-Mart is one of the biggest retail all over the world and they have lots of property they own. If they established some Day care centre for their employees especially the female employees then those employees who have kids can drop their kids in those centre and work carefree in the store. The centre could be near the store and they could also charge some amount as charge but this could not only benefit the workers but also the company for could avoid unnecessary absenteeism 3) Women’s Association An association called the Women’s Association can be formed in every retail store so that female employees can come together to discuss their issues and forward suggestions and feedback. Such programs do not have to disturb their normal work time, it could be conducted once in every month or whenever major issues arise. 4) Equal Respect At Wal-Mart’s women were mostly looked down and not given the respect they deserve. A woman may be somebody’s mother, wife or sister. Men at Wal-Mart fail to see that and they criticized women of their looks, their past, future and their purpose in life. So therefore women should be given respect and treated equally. Yes definitely the company should institute an â€Å"affirmative action† in order to promote program for the female employees. From my point of view, since the company is based in the United States they should associate their program with the Statue of Liberty . That statue denotes the power of women and it signifies the right to freedom for all the U.S citizens. The title or the main theme of such program could be â€Å"Liberty for Women†   . Whereby they could stress the freedom to speak, advance and employment especially for the female workers. They could relate women to some famous figure such as the Mother Teresa or simply their own mom. On this particular day they could give all the female employees a one-day holiday and let them embrace themselves. The company should however grant monetary compensation for this day. This way women employee could proudly say they work at Wal-Mart and dedicate completely to their work and avoid complaining. Some of the points they could keep in mind while pursuing such program could be as follows: * The right and responsibilities of women * The importance of women * The success of women till now * The potential and ability of women * The sacrifices women make in every aspect of life * And maybe life without women 5. Do you think the women deserve to win the lawsuit? Ans. Yes I feel that they should win the lawsuit. The grounds on which they are fighting is right. As everyone is equal in today’s world, the demand for female employees to have their salaries equal to that of men is justified. The company can frame new policies for salary, wages and promotion, which doesn’t discriminate men and women employees. So in the future both genders have equal opportunities and are paid equally.

Hibernation and Food Essay

When the season is changing and it is getting colder, you know that winter is coming. Animals, which are able to migrate , fly to the south to spend the winter in warmer places. What if you are an animal who is not able to fly to sunny Spain during the cold winter months? You gather a lot of nuts, find a nice den to lie in, curl up into a ball and sleep through the winter, but is that all there is to it? The common name for this event is hibernation, but scientists call it torpor or deep sleep. It is a way for animals to live in an area where during several months of the year the conditions are inhabitable for them due to food scarcity or extreme temperature change. When the conditions improve and the temperatures are up to their living standard, they can continue with their normal activities . To be able to understand completely what hibernation is it is necessary to explain the three different types of torpor. The three different types of torpor are long-term torpor or hibernation, summer torpor or aestivation and daily torpor . Hibernation or long-term torpor is an animal’s ability to adjust to cold winter temperatures and the short supply of food during these months. The animal does this by lowering its body temperature to a minimal in order to preserve energy and to slow down its metabolism . The body temperature of most animals will degrease to as low as 1˚ or 2˚C. Before the animal can start hibernating, he needs to collect food. The storage of food is essential for the animal to survive the deep sleep. This allows them to remain alive for a very long time on small supplies of energy stored in the body fat or from the food, they hoarded in their burrow. Some animals, like squirrels, do not sleep the whole time. They awaken every week or two for a couple of hours to warm up to about 37˚C so they are able to maintain their burrow. The reheating of the body costs a lot of energy. To do that multiple times during the hibernation they store extra food . It also gives certain animals a chance to raise their young during the winter months in order to protect them from other animals and the harsh climate. Examples of hibernating animals are bears, bats, squirrels, hamsters, racoons and badgers. Aestivation or summer torpor is very similar to hibernation, but in a hot or dry season of the year which does not necessarily mean during the summer. It is characterised by reduced metabolism and idleness, which allows animals to survive during increasing temperatures and limited water supplies . The animal lowers its metabolism and goes into a state of dormancy . Because this state happens during hot or dry season, the storage of water is essential. They also store food but not in the same quantities as during hibernation. Examples of aestivating animals are toads, frogs, tortoises and prairie dogs. Daily torpor is a way for animals with high metabolism to be able to preserve their feeding patterns. A hummingbird uses so much energy when it is trying to hover next to a flower that it needs the torpor to be able to feed again. Animals, which need daily torpor, use a lot of energy so they need to be able to feed as soon as they come out of their torpor. During the hours when they cannot feed, torpor makes it possible for them to live on stored energy. The animal goes into daily torpor without preparation and is able to do this by lowering its own body temperature. Even if there is not a shortage of food and the animal has enough energy left it still goes into its daily torpor. It has become build in with its own routine . Examples of animals that go into daily torpor are skunks, shrews, deer mice and gerbils. If it is a bear who needs to survive the winter and welcome the warm summer or if it is a kangaroo mouse who needs to survive the Sahara desert, torpor is necessary for animals to be able to stay alive. That means in cold surroundings but also during the heat of the deserts or just to survive at all. The three different types of torpor show that animals are able to adept and remain alive in all sorts of climates and conditions.

The Pearl Essay Example

The Pearl Essay Example The Pearl Essay The Pearl Essay Essay Topic: The Pearl In The Pearl, the author, John Steinbeck, uses the pearl to express what human nature is. At the beginning of the novel, the pearl that Kino finds is described as large as being incandescent and as perfect as the moon; by the end of the novel, Kino looks at the pearl it is ugly, gray, like a malignant growth. In general, mankind’s are greedy, deceptive and evil. In the novel, Steinbeck tries to say that human nature tendency toward greed, deception and evil, which can cause something good and beautiful to become something bad and evil in both physical and mental ways. First of all, Steinbeck shows human beings are instinctively greedy. Steinbeck uses the scene to show humans are gluttonous is where the doctor comes to Kinos house and heals Coyotes after Kino has found a pearl. When Coyotes is bitten by the scorpion, Kino takes him to the doctor to get treatment. But the doctor refuses to heal Coyotes because Kino is indigent. Later On, after Kino owns the pearl, the doctor automatically comes to Kinos house and offers a treatment for Coyotes. After he treats Coyotes, he pretends that he does not know Kino has a pearl and asks Kino about the medical expenses. You have a pearl? A good pearl? The doctor asks with interest (35). The reality is that he wants Kinos pearl more than giving people treatments. Although the doctor has a lot of money and his life is very plentiful, he still wants more and his is discontented. Obviously, the greed had already controlled the doctors mind and the way he acts. Another example that humans are greedy is the scene where Kino does not want to give up the pearl and keeps all his dreams also demonstrates peoples avarice. Juana, who is smart enough to figure out the reality of the pearl trouble, advises Kino to throw the pearl away. Juana says, This pearl is evil. This pearl is like a sin. It will destroy us all! (38). Even though Juana warns Kino that the pearl will bring misfortunes to the family and advises him to throw the pearl away, Kino neither takes the advice nor listens to what his wife says because Kinos mind is already overtaken by his dreams. He is only thinking of being Juana and Coyotes and himself standing and kneeling at the high alter (24), [dress] in the new white clothes (24), holding a Winchester carbine (25), and Coyotes sitting at a little desk in a school (25). Clearly, the greed is surpassed his mind and controls his actions and what he says. After Kino has found ofthe pearl of the world, everyone is willing to own it and they begin to start think of their own dreams, Every men suddenly [becomes] related to Kino, and Kinos pearl [goes] into the dreams, the schemes mans enemy (23). And so, the narrator says, For it is said humans are never satisfied, that you give them one thing and they want something more (25). In the scene where people try to steal Kinos pearl after the pearl is found (37-38), they do whatever that is possible in order to steal the pearl. Jealousy has grown in the heart of these people and jealousy has turned into greed. People are hurting each other and it is like a dog-eat-dog world. From greediness comes deception, which is another humans characteristic. In the scene where Kino sells his pearl, the pearl dealers try to deceive Kino since he is ignorant (48-52). They all act in collusion with each other because they want to buy the pearl at a very cheap price. In order to do that, all dealers tell lies, saying that the pearl was not valuable and it was a monstrosity because they are willing to deceive to get what they want. And, the doctor is also deceptive when he comes to Kinos house and heals Coyotes; the doctor reveals his characters of deception (30-33). The doctor makes Coyotes sick for a while by giving him a potion, which is in reality a dangerous substance. First, he overstates Coyotitos state of his illness, saying that he might die if he does not get immediate cure. Since Kino is ignorant, he does not know the doctor is telling the truth or not. The doctor gives Coyotes some potion and that makes him sick for a while and he says this potion would help Coyotes to get rid of the poison. In fact, Coyotes is getting better right before the doctor comes to heal him. The doctor smiles, but his eyes in their little lymph lined hammocks [do] not smile (30). As one reads this quote carefully, one can see what the purpose is when the doctor comes to Kinos house-either steals the pearl or forces Kino to pay for the treatment. Since the doctor knows he can retrieve power form Kino, he must want to do something to deceive Kino. The way that the doctor acts seems to be nice, helpful and kind; but what he does and thinks is unconcerned and deceptivemakes an illusion and lies to Kino. Lastly, evil is one of mankind’s instinctive qualities as well, which comes from peoples greed and deception. Steinbeck uses the doctor who refuses to treat Coyotes as a symbol of showing humans is evil. When Coyotesis bitten by the scorpion and Kino asked the doctor for treatments, he rejects to heal the Indian people who are not the same race as he is unless those people can prove that they have enough money to pay for his service, Have I nothing better to do than cure insect bites for little Indians? I am a doctor, not a veterinarian (11). Has he any money? No, they never have money. I, I alone in this world am supported to work for nothing and I am tired of it. See if he has any money! (11). Even though he might able to cure, he only cures those who can afford to pay for the treatment. On the other hand, the doctor might kills someone indirectly since the doctor refuses to heal those patients who do not get immediate cure. Also, in the scene where Kino hits Juana when she tries to throw the pearl away back in the sea without asking Kino, this reveals humans are naturally evil. He [strikes] her in the face and she [falls] among the boulders, and he [kicks] her in the side He [hisses] at her like a snake and she [stares] at him with wide unfrighten eyes, like a sheep before a butcher (59). Kino hits his wife and becomes more evil after he has found the pearl. Most important of all, he has lost his humanity and becomes like an animal. He will not consider his family anymore like he used to because he has turned evil and he is overtaken by his dreams. Also, Steinbeck uses the scene where people burn down Kinos house to show humans do evil acts to harm someone. Since the pearl dealers cannot think of a way that can deceive Kino, they burn down his house in revenge, which makes Kinos family become homeless. Kinos house has smokes of the first fires seeped out through the walls of the brush house (62) and is a tall edifice of fire lighted the pathway (63). Once again, human beings avarice and deception have turn into evil and make them do evil acts, which can harm people very easily. All in all, Steinbeck states the facts in The Pearl that humans are instinctively avaricious, deceptive and evil, which can cause something perfect and gorgeous into something bad and wicked in both physical and mental ways. At the beginning of the novel, the pearl is described as being lucent and perfect; later on, the pearl is described as having a curious dark on its surface; at the end, the pearl is ugly and gray. The doctor, townspeople and Kino, who are affected by greed, deception and evil of the humans characteristics, do something bad that makes the pearl becomes ugly and dark. We, human beings, do something bad and evil and our behavior will change the quality of an object. In other words, an objects quality depends on the way people look at it and how people treat it. If we try to get what we want and do not be concerned or examine our behaviors, something that is beautiful and perfect can turn into something bad and evil, just like the ending of this novel.

Food, College Style Essays - Meals, Types Of Restaurants, Lunch

Food, College Style Essays - Meals, Types Of Restaurants, Lunch Food, College Style Coming to this school, one of my biggest fears was what the food would be like. I knew there would be no way I could last a whole year here if the food was terrible, and my budget didn't allow eating out very often. At home when the high school cafeteria food was bad, I could always go home and get a good meal. Here, however, I couldn't just go home if the food was bad. I would just have to choke it down or starve. After I'd been here awhile, and had a couple of meals from Morrison's food service my fears were relaxed. I realized that the food wasn't that bad, and that I'd be able to make it the year without starving to death. My evaluation of Morrison's food service was based on many aspects of the whole dining experience. My judgements were not made on just one meal, but are my overall opinion of the food service since I have been here. The aspect I put the most emphasis on was the taste of the food. Without good taste in the food, the whole dining experience is ruined. The next quality that I looked at was the appearance of the food. The food should look appetizing. For example, the bread should not have any moldy spots on it, and the salad should not look like it's been left out for three days where the lettuce is brown and rotten. If the food doesn't look appetizing, this also reduces the pleasure in dining. The third aspect I judged the food service on was selection, because no matter how good the food is, if you eat the same thing long enough, it gets old. The final quality I used in judging Morrison's food service was the cleanliness of the dining area. The food overall in the tower's cafeteria is pretty good, although some meals are definitely better than others. Breakfast is probably the worst meal overall. There is very little selection of food and the food that is there is not very good. Their biscuits and gravy are very dry, their scrambled eggs are usually runny, and their hash browns taste like rubber. They usually have these three things every morning along with a few other items. However, one good thing that I like about their breakfast is that they have a waffle maker, many different types of cereal, and bagels laying out. All of these things I can fix on my own. When I do eat breakfast there, I usually stick with one of these three things. Lunch in the cafeteria is usually pretty good. The food service does a good job in giving a wide selection of food to choose from. They have pizza, pasta, hamburgers, and lunch meat everyday. All of these items are usually very good. Along with these items, they have two or three main entrees to choose from. The main entrees usually lack in taste, but every once in a while they will have something good, like pork chops and baked fish. One thing that I did notice about the food served at lunch is that it is sometimes leftover from different meals that we had earlier that week. This really isn't that bad though, because it is very hard to tell that it has been reheated. The appearance of the regular items is usually pretty good. The hamburgers lack color, but they make up for this in taste. The appearance of the main entrees vary from day to day. Sometimes they look very appetizing and other days they look as if they just mixed a whole bunch of stuff together and! put it out there. Supper is the best meal of the day. Like lunch, they have a good selection with the usual pizza, pasta, hamburgers, and lunch meat. They also have two or three main entrees, but these usually taste better than those that they have for lunch. My favorite meals for supper are when they have premium night. For premium night they serve items like steak, shrimp, ribs, and chicken fried steak. The appearance of the food at supper is usually pretty good. However, one problem that I

A Mnemonic Device Can Be Used

A Mnemonic Device Can Be Used The beginning development of mnemonic starts with a poet named Simonides of Ceos in fifth century B.C. This mnemonic invented by the Greeks for memory training around 2500 years ago. The Greek lyric poet Simonides, born in 556 B.C., is attributed with inventing mnemonics. His creation have great benefit thought us, many people success is because using this mnemonic method. There do many types of mnemonics device exist and which type works best is limited only by the imagination of each individual learner. Here are the 9 basic types of mnemonics device presented in this paper include Music, Name, Expression/Word, Model, Ode/Rhyme, Note Organization, Image, Connection, and Spelling Mnemonics. Mnemonics are memory devices that help learners remember larger pieces of information, especially in the form of lists like characteristics, steps, stages, parts, phases, etc. Mnemonics device try to transform information into a form that the human brain can remember better than its original form . Although the process of applying this transformation might already aid the transfer of information to long-term memory but this is still benefit to learner. The mnemonic device commonly practice for lists and in auditory  form, such as short poems,  acronyms, or memorable phrases, but mnemonics can also be for other types of information and in visual or kinesthetic forms. This device use is based on the examination that the human brain more easily remembers many form of information. In our daily, we have to remember everything. In school, we have to remember all the knowledge about subject; in workplace, we have to remember all the information about our task, in order to remember this entire thing we have to find out what method can enhance our memory. In my example, I am hardly to spell â€Å"mnemonic†, so I use the concept of mnemonic device and create my word, which is â€Å"Mnemonic Notes Effective Memorized on New Ideas Creativity†. From my creation, I know that every first letter for every word is â€Å"Mnemonic†. Using this method, we not only can spell out those difficult words and also can remember it. Mnemonic device play an important role in our daily life, although it is important, it still has their limitations or advantages and disadvantages. For the advantage of mnemonic devices is it provide a method to help us recall those information which is difficult to remember. Moreover, it involve rearranging or restructuring information that help our personalize information to become a smart learner. Other than that, it also increases our interest to study by creating my way to learn with information. Lastly, mnemonic devices will help us spend less time on retrieving our information in long term memory when we properly use it. Beside advantages, mnemonic devices also have some limitation. If a person uses mnemonics too frequently, he or she will have confusion on their learning process. For example, we use mnemonic to remembe r difficult word, but he or she who too extensively using mnemonic will use this method on every word no matter the word is difficult or not. This problem will occur on those who too rely on mnemonics. In addition, this mnemonic device need more time to practice, create and learn. If someone still cannot understand the practice, which mean that he or she is just wasting time to practice it.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - Essay Example The ultimate result is the person's ability to suppress fear is impaired, which may be due to intense fear. Person's intrinsic ability is markedly affected which leads to the fact that such victims are very anxious and feel ashamed in asking help from others or visiting the concerned medical professional like a psychologist or psychiatrist. Our brain needs time to make the proper image of the event, which does not happen in PTSD. The predisposing factors play an important role in the development of PTSD. In early childhood, if a person is neglected by his family members or beaten up severely by his father or any family member or any friend which has detached him emotionally or any sort of mental torture or sexual assault can lead to the development of PTSD. Among adults, either mental torture, any accident seen in real life, death of a loved one, assaulted sexually or physically which may have given rise to certain complications like loss of a limb, which resulted in permanent disability but this, is not necessary in every case. In addition to all above-mentioned factors, family history of any existing psychiatric illness and natural disasters like tornadoes or earthquakes can also be held responsible for the development of PTSD (Peterson, 1991). According to Elizabeth (2005), 49% of the cases of PTSD are seen in rape victims and that could be the possible explanation of the fact that PTSD is more prevalent in females as compared to males. (Peterson, 1991). Religion definitely affects the person in many ways and whether it plays any role in the development of PTSD would be a topic of debate. In general, people with strong religious beliefs are more likely to cope with stressful events and life threatening conditions. Race has also relationship with PTSD, as it is more common in Blacks and Hispanics as compared to Whites (Peterson, 1991). Management of PTSD through Coping Mechanisms We all are aware of the incident, which took place on September 11, 2001 in World Trade Centre. Among the first responders of that event who survived, Stephen King was one of them. Coping mechanisms are simply the ways by means of which person stabilizes himself after any traumatic situation and such skills are developed naturally which enables the victim not to lose control and this makes person realize that now the patient have to live with this fact. For example, if someone lost his lower limb and realized that now the patient have to live with one leg will make him feel comfortable. Coping mechanisms are an excellent and perhaps the better ways for treating PTSD. Coping enables the person to react positively against the stressful events. It may take some time for an individual to respond but it is surely effective (Kinchin, 2004). What all the victims need to do is to take care of themselves. A victim should make him busy in different activities like walking, jogging, exercise, social gatherings, going on a long drive with the loved one or visiting a picnic spot with family members or friends. A victim should discuss the events with the close friends whom

Comparison of food-labelling laws of products containing GMOs in the Research Paper

Comparison of food-labelling laws of products containing GMOs in the European Union and the United States - Research Paper Example There has been a debate in whether manufacturers of GMOs should be forced to label their produce as GMO products. In the USA, many manufacturers of GMOs have argued against this idea saying that it would only cause unnecessary fear and speculation from the consumers. In light of this, the European Union and the United States of America have been in the front line in ensuring that these organisms have been regulated in both countries especially the foods to certify them for human consumptions (Albert 2). In European Union, Genetically Modified Organisms are mostly combined with irradiated foods which further categorize them as the type of foods that require evaluation from the food safety in the country such as the European Food Safety Authority(EFSA) (Princen 215). However, the EFSA must seek authorization from the European Commission , who have the mandate of writing down the proposal in reference to denying or granting the authorisation of the GMOs in their market. Of importance to note is that the European Commission may take a substantial period of time depending on the type of GMOs that have been put under scrutiny. According to the country’s regulation, the European Commission ensures that cases revolving GMOs are thoroughly investigated and confirmed especially those that need Safeguard clauses and temporary restriction. Similarly, the United States have taken the initiative of ensuring that Genetically Modified Organism (GMOs) are identified through labelling to provide a clear understanding of the organisms especially foods that are mostly used by human beings. In essence, the effects of the GMOs brought concern to product that were said to have ingredients that genetically modified. Apparently, people in the United States of America have constituently pushed for the initiation of food labelling laws due to the assumption that most GMOs are argued to cause cancer and other chronic diseases. Nevertheless, food labelling law in the country have co ntinually reduced fear among the people as it ensures that it is easy to differentiate between organisms that genetically modified and those that are not (Elderidge 133). However, laws regarding food labelling in the United States have met constant opposition usually fuelled by manufacturers of GMOs and junk food. For instance, in a state wide election in California in the 6th of November last year, a law called the proposition 36 was rejected in California. It is believed that the manufacturers of junk food and GMOs spend over $46 million to defeat the proposition. In Europe, the issue of labelling seems to be taken more seriously than in USA. For instance, in Europe, any food product that has a little as 0.9 percent of GM material has by law be labelled. This is not the same in USA. Of importance is that the senate in the United States of America have continually debated on this issue with the Vermont House argues to have passed a controversial bill that was said to require labell ing of foods with GMOs. Fortunately, the bill gained enormous support from twenty seven other states. Although, a tag of war was witnessed when three of the senate disputed the labelling of the product, a group of advocates affirmed that consumers have the right to know the kind of foods that they were using in terms of whether they were

Socrates on Unexamined Life - Essay Example Socrates insistence on this claim portrays that human beings are born or called to reflect upon their beliefs, speak to seek out, account for what they do not know and know, live accordance to their views and defend those beliefs that make a meaningful and well-lived life. Socrates was right to make this claim (Plato, 2015). It follows human nature to live examined lives. For instance, we naturally live by the directions of pain and pleasure. Human beings are naturally drawn to the forces of wealth, power, and reputation. Socrates’ call to live an examined life does not necessarily show insistence to reject such inclinations and motivations (Plato, 2009). Instead, his claim was an injunction to appraise the true worth of the human soul. He believed that people should live by reflections upon their everyday values and motivations, and most importantly, to inquire knowledge into the real world and worth. Subsequently, if there is any. During his jurisdictions, he examines the lives of the juror. Socrates, who awaited prosecution at that time, ends up being the prosecutor when he surreptitiously accuses those behind his conviction and sentences him of failing to live a good life that respects humanity (Plato, 2009). High School and Local Elementary School Essay Example for Free

High School and Local Elementary School Essay It feels like just yesterday I was in high school, without cares just making my portfolio. Now, it’s been a couple years since college and I’m trying to adjust to married life. It’s been about a year or so since I got hitched. I’m getting ready to have my first child, Winter. I hope to have another in a few years. I currently teach fifth grade in a local elementary school. It’s an okay job, the pay is alright it will get me through my bills, after a few more years I should be getting a raise. I talk to my parents a lot now, they are very important to me. My husband and I are trying to decide how to raise our child. I believe the most important value my parents taught me was to always be polite to people because you never know who is watching. I hope my child grows up learning that. I am very in love with my husband, we met at school and we had an instant connection. Both my grandmother and grandfather have died, it was very tough but time heals all wounds. My husband and I live in a little house but we are looking to relocate to somewhere a little bigger, for the children. We go to the Catholic church every sunday and are very involved in church life. My hope for the future is that I raise my kids to be fabulous people and never give up. The three most important things that have happened since high school would be, graduating college, getting married, and now having my child. What I miss most about the â€Å"good old days† is just being able to horse around without having to care about bills and work. When I die, I hope everyone remembers me as a nice person who tried her best to do well.

The Real White Mans Burden Irony and Symbolism

The Real White Mans Burden Irony and Symbolism I aim to evaluate the use of irony and symbol in the poems The White Mans Burden and the Real White Mans Burden to see how effective both writers were in using these elements to convey meanings. In the case of Kipling, I will consider two points of views. The first point of view is that Kipling was an imperialist who supports the take over of other governments to show superiority. The second point of view is that Kipling was an imperialist who supports the take over of other governments as an act of humanity to bring civilization to the uncivilized and, that he warns of the perils of showing superiority as oppose to bringing true liberation. In the case of Crosby, since he presents a single view point, I will evaluate his effectiveness of using irony and symbolism in parodying the work of Kipling. Effectively used, irony and symbol could convey a message with more than one meaning as demonstrated in Rudyard Kiplings poem The White Mans Burden or, they could convey a single message de monstrated in Ernest H. Crosbys poem The Real White Mans Burden. In the final analysis, I submit that the effective use of the elements of poetry, in this case, irony and symbol, are vital to the correct interpretation and understanding of the meaning of both poems. In order to establish a well-rounded understanding of the basis for the two interpretations of Kiplings work and the single interpretation of the work of Crosby, I submit definitions for the terms imperialism, irony, and symbol. These definitions will also serve to show whether or not there was effectiveness in the use of the elements of poetry, in both poems. As defined by Dictionary.Com: Imperialism is the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies. Irony is the discrepancy between what is said, done, expected or intended, and what is meant, what happens, and what others understand. Satirical irony is the exposure of the vices or follies of an individual, a group, an institution, an idea, a society, usually with a view to correct the folly. Symbol is anything that stands for something else. (Dictionary.Com) Having establishing the definitions, I will now analyze the use of irony and symbols in Ruyard Kiplings poem. While Kipling uses both irony and symbols, his use of irony is greater. Kiplings expertly uses irony to bring about the intended end result of two opposing perspectives as to whether imperialism is for human good or elitist gain. In the first view point, Kipling uses the poem The White Mans Burden to encourage America to take over the Phillipines imperialistically or, for elitist gain. Kipling writes: Take up the White mans burden / Send forth the best ye breed / Go bind your sons in exile / To serve your captives need; (1-4) The first observation of the poem is Kiplings decision to call the poem The White Mans Burden. Undoubtedly, the use of the phrase White Man is the lightening rod that sparks the view that Kiplings position was that of an imperialist having at its core the tenets of Social Darwinism. According to Kretchner, the concept of Social Darwinism purports that natural order obligates powerful, civilized nations to appropriate the limited resources of the weak. (Kretchmar) Hence, Kiplings urging of America to assist the Phillipines to reach civilization may be interpreted as him supporting the imperialistic movement. Even further, Kiplings encouragement that the empire should send forth the best ye breed has very strong racial connotations. During that time in history, blacks were not considered as equals to whites in America. The unequal treatment of blacks was so prevalent in Americas economic, political, and social systems that James Weldon Johnson, writes Lift Every Voice and Sing also known as the Black National Anthem, to encourage black people to sing and march until victory is won. This cry for equality continues in 1968, with Martin Luther King still only having a dream of equality. Though, in 2008, Barrack Obama becomes the first black President, there still remains the cry for true equality. In addition to the charges to Take up White Mans burden / Send forth the best ye breed(1-2), Kiplings use of phrases such as To veil the threat of terror / And check the show of pride. (11-12) asserts that the Empire must do what is necessary to eliminate resistance and to subdue insurrections against Imperialism. Not only should the Empire silence the voices of the captives, but she must also limit or remove any signs of pride that they might muster. Further, Kiplings characterizations of the people as On fluttered folk and wild / New caught- sullen peoples, / Half-devil and half-child. (6-8) may be easily construed as connatively condescending. Kipling seems to imply that the empire must be prepared to reinforce her stance By open speech and simple / A hundred times make plain (13-14). Kiplings distinction of the empire seem to be lofty in its tone. By marrying the symbols of the captives as being inferior people to the santimonious responsibility of the Empire to bring civility to the uncivilized, one can conclude that Kipling supports that the Empire is superior and hence has the responsibility to bring civility to the uncivilized. Ironically, the same body of work that interpretively champions the Empire as being superior to the captives, implores the empire to be fair and complete in its liberation of the captives. The second point of view to the work of Kipling in the The White Mans Burden is 4that he advocates for the fair treatment of the captives. Kiplings urging of the empire to liberate the captives and to take care of their needs can be found throughout his poem. According to Bonamy Dobree, while speaking to Canadians in 1907, Kipling said: I have, I confess it now, done my best for about twenty years to make all men of  the sister nations within the Empire interested in each other. Because I know that at heart all our men are pretty much alike, in that they have the same aspirations, and when all is said and done we have only each other to depend upon. (Dobree 80) Kipling demonstrates a view consistent to those who believe that true liberation is not oppressive. For example, he writes: Take up the White Mans burden / The savage wars of peace- / Fill full the mouth of Famine / And bid the sickness cease; (17-20) Further, Kipling warns the Empire that all of its actions or inactions, all that it say or not say will help to determine how the captives view the Empire and its God. Here is what Kipling says: By all ye cry or whisper, / By all ye leave or do, / The silent, sullen peoples / Shall weigh your gods and you. (45-48) In addition to how the captives view the Empire and its God, Kipling writes that other countries and future generations will also look at the treatment of the captives and judge the Empire. Kipling goes on to tell the empire not to celebrate its victory or relish in the praise, since these acts are childish, but that the Empire should be more concern with how the work would be judged by the Empires peers for years to come.To encapsulate the view that Kipling wanted the Empire to bring civilization without showing superiority, his closing verse from the poem is submitted. Kipling writes: Take up the White Mans burden / Have done with childish days / The lightly preferred laurel, / The easy, ungrudged praise. / Comes now, to search your manhood / Through all the thankless years / Cold. Edged with dear-bought wisdom, / The judgment of your peers! (49-56) These words clearly indicate that Kipling encourage the Empire to be honorable in its dealings with the Natives. Contrary to the school of thought that Kipling advocates civilization with true liberation, is Crosbys position that the Empire uses blessings as a doorway to go in and take away the true riches of the people and in exchange gives them an oppressive life style. Unlike Kiplings rendering of his poem, The White Mans Burden where he shows his trust for the Empire, Crosby in his parody The Real White Mans Burden, blatantly shows his mistrust of the Empire. Most importantly, though he employs heavy use of irony and symbols to demonstrate his opposing view of the Empire, Crosby does not dillute the single message of his poem. First, Crosbys title of the poem is a clear indicator of his dissent from Kiplings views. He uses the term White Man to solidify the object of his remarks, but, he goes further by using the word Real which ironically implies that there is a masking of the truth. Crosbys title speaks strongly of his judgment against the Empire. Historically, his point of view is drawn from his experiences as a social activist and as a black man living in America at the time of the Spanish American War. According to an essay by Andrew Hebard, Crosbys position on Imperialism mirrors that of Amy Kaplan who says imperialism is as a network of power relations that changes over space and time and is riddled with instability, ambiguity, and disorder, rather than as a monolithic system of domination that the very word empire implies. (Hebard) Next, are observations of the blending of symbol and irony used by Crosby to demonstrate his view of the Empire. Crosby believes that the motive of the Empire is ill-willed. He also believes that their chaiotic sytems bring failure, and the Empire dangle proverbial carrots in exchange for far more valuable gains. Crosbys position is that the eventual outcome of imperialism will be social, economical, and political oppression. At this time, a detailed look at Crosbys use of irony and symbols to depict the social climate that prevailed in America, the climate which he opposed to being introduced to the Natives, is warranted. Crosby asserts: Take up the White Mans burden; / Send forth your sturdy sons, / And load them down with whisky / And Testaments and guns. (1-4) Ironically, these lines subliminally say that the drinking of whiskey mask the truth, since it is widely known that people who consume too much alcohol are not as cognitively aware as they should be and, therefore, not able to think correctly are apt to believe anything told to them. Further, being loaded down with whiskey causes a usually sturdy person to stagger, and even fall. More overtly though, is the fact that Testament represents truth and wholesomeness, and guns represent power and destruction. But, because the minds are altered with alcohol, the masking of the real motive is easily perpetrated. There is a strong possibility that the soldiers will introduce the social ill of alcoholism to the natives, and will also help to spread propoganda about the good of imperialisim thereby causing the natives to become drunk and misinformed. The abililty of the natives to think reasonably correct about their condition will be diminished. To further support his view of social failure and to show that the Empire thinks that the Natives have limited information and can be easily captured if not military, certainly they can be captured through the spread of socially communicable diseases. Crosby writes: Throw in a few diseases / to spread in tropic climes, / For there the healthy niggers / Are quite behind the times. (5-8) Crosby bolsters his position of social oppression by saying: Give them electrocution chairs, / And prisons too, galore, / And if they seem inclined to kick, / Then spill their heathen gore. (21-24) The symbols of electrocution chairs, prisons, and gore ironically speaks of death both physically and mentally. Physically speaking, there is the death of the person whether by electrocution, or the spilling of the blood. Then, there is death of having freedom of space, since prisons limit movement. While subtle, based on Crosbys account, the intention to kill the dreams of the natives, screams from the pages of history. Crosby knows from his experience, that if any form of resistance, whether through word or action, is shown, if any attempt to pursue any dreams, ideologies, or customs that threatens the goals of the Empire is made, that the Empire would by any means necessary, ensure that the pursuit of those dreams was deferred and dry up like A Raisins in the Sun. (Diyanni 1870 ) In addition to social oppression, Crosby purports that the Natives will be opressed economically through hard labor as well as through the Empires system of taxation and debt. The view point of oppresive labor is aptly projected through the use of irony. Crosby claims: And dont forget the factories. / on those benighted shores / They have no cheerful iron mills / Nor eke departmemnt stores / They never work twelve hours a day, / And live in strange content. (9-14) Through his masterful use of irony, Crosby argues that the natives, who did not work as long hours as did the Americans, were very content with what little they thought they had. However, the bigger issue for Crosby appears to be that Empire knew that the natives were actually very successful and wealthy and sought to make them believe that their way of life was inadequate, and to turn them from being owners of the land to laborers in the land so that the Empire may be expanded. (A perfect combination of imperialism and colonialism!) Even more indicative of his stance against economic oppression, Crosby decried the imposing of taxation and debt. He writes: Take up the White Mans burden, / And teach the Phillipines / What interest and taxes are / and what a mortgage means. (17-20) Again, in Crosbys minds eye, there is the irony of a people who are successful in their simple but, independent way of life who being militarily inferior are consequently forced to become failures by their dependence on a monstrous financial system. In a final attempt to show the fallacy of the Empire, Crosby highlights the political climate that the Empire embraces. He pens: They need our labor question, too, / And politics and fraud. / Weve made a pretty mess at home; / Lets make a mess abroad. (25 -28) The irony in these lines humorously evaluate the endeavor of the Empire to fix anothers problem, when it cannot solve its own problems. In a nutshell, Crosby believes that Imperialism is a preposterous veiled attempt to cloak greed in kind deeds by using methods that are disfunctional. In summarizing his single message of the failure and hypocrisy of the Empire, Crosby does three things. First he mocks what the Empire regards as a valiant mission, Next, he shows the unparrarel trade that the Empire wants, and then, he addresses the faà §ade of the scripting of the mission that the Empire prefer to be written in the annals of history. The use of satirical irony and symbols are well armoured vehicles to deliver these points. Crosby declares: Take up the White Mans burden; / to you who thus succeed / In civilizing savage hordes / They owe a debt, indeed; (33 -36) Crosby questions the validity of the mission. He goes on to weigh the exchange between the Empire and the Natives. He adds: Concessions, pensions, salaries, / And priviledge and right, / with outstretched hands you raised to bless / Grab everything in sight. (37 -40). In terms of irony, not only is there a contrast between how much is given verses how much is taken, but, also of what is given verses what is taken. The natives receive a few limited handouts like agreements, benefits, and paychecks and, in exchange the Empire takes ownership of the natives land and naturual resources. Interpretively, Crosby demostrates this transaction as a falling leap by going from owning to owing; which is very much an uneven trade. Finally, he attacks the hypocrisy of using the art of writing to distort the issue and hide the true motive of the Empire. It is necessary to present the catalog of words Crosby uses to expose what he views as being socially, economically, and politically incorrect . Crosby concludes: Take up the White Mans burden, / And if your write in verse, / Flatter your Nations vices, / And strive to make them worse. / Then learn that if with pious words / you ornament each phrase, / In a world of canting hypocrites / This kind of business pays. (41 48) Fittingly, Crosby uses satirical irony to reveal the true motive of the insincere enthusiam that Crosby believes Kipling is showing for the Empires high ideals of pious goodness. Crosby is successful in presenting the single viewpoint of the Empires greed disguised as bringing civility to the uncivilized. In conclusion, the expert use of irony and symbol by both Kipling and Crosby prove to be excellent conveyors of the poets messages. Kiplings use of irony and symbol brillantly delivered two very contradictory positions. He lauds Imperialism by advocating that it is the responsibility of civilized nations to help to bring civilization to underdeveloped nations. He also decries the pride of thinking to be superior and being unfair to people perceived to be less finanically fortunate, not as socially advanced, and not as politically savvy. Like Kipling, Crosby employs irony and symbols to deliver his solo message. Crosbys message is that the Empire is hypocrital in its motive and that the gist of what they really wanted to do was camoflagued by missions to humanity, and described as helping to bring civilization to the uncivilized. Clearly, the poets use of irony and symbol shaped the understanding and interpretation of the poems intended meanings. The use of Irony and Symbol was so wel l executed, there remains no argument as to the value of these elements in both poems.
